Gosaikunda Lake trekking is a must do pilgrimage trekking for Hindus. Gosaikund lake trek is also called the frozen lake trekking in Lantang National Park.
Gosaikunda lake trek is also known as “the frozen lake” trekking among the trekkers, starts in Dhunche in the Langtang region, climbs up to the sacred lake- Gosaikunda at 4380 m and goes down through Helambu region as part of the Helambu circuit trek and finishes at Sundarijal, 30 min drive from Kathmandu. Alternatively, trekkers may also start from Sundarijal which lies on the outskirts of Kathmandu.
The Gosaikunda Lake is a significant place of interest in Dhunche-Helambu trekking route. Gosaikunda lake trekking adjoins the famous Lantang valley trek and the other two treks can be combined. There are lodges along this trek, means that no need to worry about sleeping, breakfast and supper. I would still recommend carrying a sleeping bag, since blankets are not always available in the lodges. Warm clothes are very important. Walking poles are highly recommended.
Gosaikunda Lake is an alpine freshwater lake in Langtang National Park, located at an altitude of 4, 380m. Gosainkunda Lake has enlisted in Ramsar site. There are 108 lakes in this area, small to medium in size. Gosaikunda Lake remains frozen for six months in winter Nov to April, so this is called Frozen Lake and frozen lake trekking as well. Gosainkunda Lake is a holy religious site for Hindus. Gosainkunda is as the abode of Hindu deities Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri, it says on Hindu mythology. Gosaikunda is believed to have formed from the digging of the land by Trishul (Trident: holy three pointed sword) of lord Shiva after he drank the poison from Samundra manthan and desperately wanted cold water to quench the overwhelming heat.
This frozen lake trek belongs to medium to difficult grade of trekking. A good physical fitness and good trekking equipment is required for this trekking.
