Trip Itinerary

After breakfast, transfer to the Domestic Airport for the Trans Himalayan flight and dramatic landing on the hillside at Lukla: gateway to the Khumbu/Everest region. Meet your local porters and walk downhill to the Sherpa settlement of Cheplung. The trail then follows the side of the Dudh Koshi Valley before ascending to Ghat (2,530m/8,350ft). Another gentle hour leads up to Phakding.

The trail meanders through pine forest, along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges via the Sherpa villages of Benkar, Chumoa, Monjo and Jorsale: entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park and permit checkpoint; with tranquil views of glistening Thamserku (6,618m/21,714m). The trail continues along the riverbed to the confluence of the Bhote and Dudh Koshi Rivers. It then climbs steadily, crossing the high Tenzing- Hilary suspension bridge: with inspiring glimpses of Everest and the Nuptse – Lhotse ridge. A final three hour ascent through pine forest leads to the prosperous trading and administrative town of Namche Bazaar.

This is a scheduled acclimatization day on the trek. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and health experts recommend a stop for at least one extra night. Be active and roam rather than laze around: climb high and sleep low is the acclimatization advice. Take an entertaining side trip to the large traditional Sherpa village of Khumjung (3,780m/12,402ft): with fine views of Thamserku, Kangtega, Ama Dablam and Everest – in a sea of lesser peaks. Return to Namche Bazaar for the night.

The trail climbs up from the town and then contours around the hillside, offering great views including Everest and Khumjung. Look out for spotted deer, Himalayan tahrs and birds – including the colorful (male) Danphe pheasant (Nepal’s national bird). The trail rises to Sanasa where the routes to Gokyo and Everest BC fork. The trail to the right then descends to cross the Dudh Koshi (past water driven prayer wheels) on a suspension bridge near Phunki Thenga (3,250m/10,663ft), the lowest point north of Namche Bazaar. It then enters the Imja Khola Valley and rises steeply, through dwarf conifers and rhododendron forest, for a two hour pull, to the hilltop village of Tengboche. Their famous Gompa is set against the backdrop of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Everest, Kangtega and other peaks. At full moon in October/November they hold the colourful Mani Rimdu festival which includes masked dancing and Tibetan Opera in the monastery courtyard. Visit the monastery during the afternoon.

Today’s trail descends to Debuche: a scattered stone village with a nunnery, chortens and long mani wall. Cross the suspension bridge over the Imja Khola and gradually ascend to Pangboche with views of towering Ama Dablam (6,856m/22,495ft perhaps the most beautiful mountain in the Everest region). The trail then follows the river fairly closely as it gradually rises to its confluence with the Lobuche Khola and continues up to Dingboche: the last year-round Sherpa settlement in the region. Different views of Ama Dablam rise above the terraced fields of barley, buckwheat and potatoes. The fields are walled to protect crops from icy winds and animals during the short growing season.

This is another scheduled rest day on the trek and will assist your fitness and oxygen intake at the higher altitudes to follow. An enjoyable 3-4 hrs side walk, 400m climb to Nangkartshang Gompa, on the ridge north of Dingboche village can be the best choice. This vintage point offers Mt. Makalu (8,463m) fifth highest Mountain in the world to the east and awesome view of Mt. Ama Dablam and valley floor. If you have more energy, continue to Nagarjune Hill summit (5090m) for additional adventure and thrill. Return from the rarefied air to Dingboche for the night.

The trail climbs to a ridge providing towering views of Taboche Peak and Cholatse and continues through Yak pastures before crossing a wooden bridge over a roaring stream to Duglha (4,620m/15,158ft). The trail then ascends steeply for an hour, up the gravely terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. On the summit is a large group of stone-pile memorials to lost Sherpas and climbers. It also affords great border-views including Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Pumori. Everest is hidden behind the towering wall of Nuptse and Lhotse. Follow the valley upstream for about an hour to Lobuche.

A long rewarding day, follow the windblown and rocky path along the barren moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to the last village at Gorak Shep. After an early lunch, set out on the feint trail to the world’s highest Base Camp, on the Khumbu Glacier: opposite the dreaded icefall – the most dangerous section of an Everest ascent. Trek back to Gorak Shep for the night at Lodge.

A very early morning climb of 2-3 hours up Kala Patthar, behind the village, offers a sunrise awakening of the Himalayan chain. Drop back to Gorakshep for breakfast, and then retrace your steps down to Lobuche. Return to the snout of the Khumbu glacier, dropping down the moraine and continuing on to the village of Pheriche for a lower and warmer night.

Today’s trail gradually descends to Deboche before a mild rise through rhododendron forest to the hilltop village of Tengboche which has an important monastery and great views in all directions. A long descent, leads to Phunki Thenga (3,250m/10,663ft) on the Imja Khola: the trek’s lowest point north of Lukla. The path then climbs to Sanasa (where the trail forked to Gokyo) beyond which it broadens for the pleasant contour walk back to Namche Bazaar.

From Namche, the trail descends to more comfortable altitudes, passing through the friendly farming villages of Jorsale (where we exit the National Park), Monjo, Phakding, then crosses the suspension bridge at Thado Koshi before rising to Ghat and Cheplung. Round off the adventure with the final 700m, 35min ascent to Lukla: and say goodbye to your porters.

Trek Accommodation

You will get basic tea houses for boarding/lodging.This is the most popular style of trekking to Everest Base Camp and simply involves trekking from teahouse to teahouse. Teahouses are essentially small hotels find in local villages that offer both a place to sleep as well as home cooked meals. Rooms are typically shared with 2 trekkers in a room. Bathrooms are shared as well and in the Everest Base Camp Trek, the lodges usually have running cold water and western style toilets. Also the hot shower is also available but it need to pay extra cost for it.

In some of the villages on the trek, it may be possible to have a private room with an extra cost and we will do our best to arrange that. However, during busy times of the year there is a limited amount of lodging available in some of the villages so it's generally impossible to arrange private rooms. This is the case even if you're willing to pay extra since the tea house owners will not give out a private room if it means someone else goes without a room.

Trek Meals/Food

Trekkers can choose meals from menu at tea houses. Typical meals on EBC trek includes omelets, toast, boiled eggs, noodle soup, fried rice, macaroni, momo, vegetarian curries, pizza or chow mein. The traditional Nepali Dal Bhat which consists of rice, lentils, and a vegetable is all you can eat and always a good choice. Meat on the mountain is not hygienic and we suggest trekkers stick with vegetarian options.

There is not a problem for vegetarian food and in fact we recommend that everyone stick with a vegetarian diet on the trek as the local meat is not refrigerated properly. If you have special dietary requirements just let us know and we will make sure to assist with the proper menu.

If someone get sick in the group, a fellow trekker in the group has to descend with a porter/assistant guide. The rest of the other people in the group continue their trek to Everest base camp. In serious and emergency case, we also do medical evacuation and helicopter rescue to Kathmandu hospital.

There is no specify training method to recommend. We advise you to exercise a minimum of 5 times per week for one hour each time doing activities like hill walking, cycling, running and strength work.

There will be 2 to 12 travelers in the group. The Everest Base Camp trek is a popular trip, so most of groups are fully booked. No, we are not spending overnight at the Everest Base Camp. You will stay at Gorakshep from where we hike to Everest Base Camp. To spend night at Everest Base Camp require special permit which are very expensive. Also, there is no tea houses at Everest Base Camp. So it is better to stay at Gorakshep and trek to Everest Base Camp for a day trip.

The most difficult and underestimated aspect of the EBC trek is the altitude. The trek steadily climbs as the path winds it way up to Base Camp. There is no correlation between altitude sickness and fitness levels gender or age. Everyone is potentially at risk. Trek up slowly with enough rest days is nice to avoid AMS.

This is a wilderness trek with no paved section ascends and descends often. Make sure you rest often enough to prevent over-tiredness. 15 km trek a day is often rocky, steep and fairly slow going depending on when you trek, the trails can also be covered in snow trekking EBC in Dec-Jan-Feb.

Everest Base Camp trek is not dangerous at all because trekkers are not going into the danger zones where real climbing is required, and they stay below the most dangerous altitudes - there's little risk involved though on Everest Base Camp Trek.

Weather/Temperature in Summer like in June, July, and August will be in between 20 to 25 degree centigrade. The lowest that the temperature gets in the night time is -3 degree centigrade and a maximum of 5 degrees. The temperature in the months of June and July are pretty similar.

Weather/Temperature in Autumn from September to November in between 12 degree to 20 degree in in the day time. The sun is not as warm as in the summer, but that is expected. In September the average nighttime temperature is almost 3 degrees. This starts to fall down and reach in between -7 to - 15 degrees in November

Weather/Temperature in Winter in December, January and February in between 10 degree to -20 degree.

Weather/Temperature in Spring like in March/April/ May in between 20 degree to -10 degree.

Yes, there is a good mobile phone reception on the trek with good internet coverage in all small villages though it is expensive as it is owned by a private company by the name Everest Link. From them you have to buy volume not time and after activation it is only good for not more than a day.

There are a number of internet cafes along the route like in Lukla and Namche Bazaar. After that there are several dotted along the route, including a good one in Gorakshep. Be warned though, these internet cafes are not always reliable and signal is often poor/lost. Most tea houses will offer wifi, however, this will come at a cost that is usually more expensive than an internet cafe.

At the lower altitude like Lukla, Phakding, Namche the guesthouses provide hot shower. And in rest of places at higher elevation, warm water in the bucket will be provided for shower. For all the showers, it costs you extra payment, range from USD 5 per shower. The higher you go, hot shower is more expensive.

Cash transaction is highly recommended. Please change the currency in local Nepali Rupees before you trek to everest base camp. The ATM machine is available only in Namche and relying on it is not a better idea as you never know when things stops working. Also if you try to exchange your foreign currency there you get a very very less exchange rate. So changing money from Kathmandu and taking Nepalese cash is a good idea.

The hotel in Kathmandu provides free storage services. So you can leave all your items that does not require for trekking at your hotel, and you can also leave at our office too.

This is a difficult thing to gauge. We have seen everything from USD 20 to USD 1000 per person for guides and porters. Tipping is a small gesture of thanks to your guide and local porters. The level of the tip should reflect the level of satisfaction from and personal involvement with your guide. However, we recommend you to spend minimum 10% of your total trip cost for tipping entire local staffs, the ratio of tipping guide and porter will be given to you at the pre-trip meeting in Kathmandu before starting the trek.

The electricity gadgets charging facility is available in most of the places by paying some cost. Remember to bring TWO and THREE pin travel adapters. You can also buy the adapters in the super markets or electronic shops in the Kathmandu. Our guide can help you with it

Yes, most of our departures sell out during the peak seasons but during the off season we generally have smaller groups. We guarantee all departures once you make the deposit. We will run the trek for you even if you would be alone there at the same group cost.

It is not really necessary. We get a lot of first time trekkers in the group, so even if you don't have experience you will be in a good company. Your fitness level should be such that your comfortable walking all day. Previous, hiking or trekking experience is always a plus.
