Tsum Valley Trek 12 days is an awesome and impressive trek in Manaslu due to its beautiful landscapes, old monasteries, mountains and villages. In the lap of Manaslu Himalayas, Tsum valley is the world’s remotest valleys, recently opened for trekking.

Meaning of Tsum Valley Trek 12 days

Literally “Tsum” means vivid and a holy hidden valley of happiness. Tsum Valley Trek in Manaslu is rich in ancient art, culture and Buddhist religion. The people Tsum valley are of Tibetan descendants. The lesser known and recently opened new trekking trail in Nepal, Tsum valley trek remains untouched from the outside world. So we call Tsum Valley, a virgin trekking trail where an elements of adventure is very much alive.

Tsum Valley Trek offers an old Tibetan Buddhist culture and Milarepa’s meditate caves. Tsum Valley is a precious gems of Nepal. The word Tsum comes from a Tibetan word, Tsombo means vivid. The scenery is stunning with beautiful country sides, valleys and the towering peak Ganesh Himal.

The 12 days Tsum Valley trip start and end point is Arughat a seven hours bus or jeep drive from Kathmandu. The first half of the trek is ascending path and follow the Budhi Gandaki river, the gorgeous river. Also you will pass a mix of dense forest, and terrace fields to reach Tsum Valley. Trekking follows the main trail of Manaslu Circuit Trek for the Tsum valley, a sacred hidden valley.

The Tsum Valley trail pass through the alpine forests, glacial rivers, and enjoy the warm hospitality of ethnic people. Also visit the ancient Gumbas of the region such as Rachen Gompa, Mu Gompa. The trail starts at low, passing through lush green hillside, landscape and small Hindu villages. The 12 day trek to Tsum Valley will find yourself in beautiful pine, and rhododendron forests.

Heading east towards the valley opens up to reveal beautiful landscapes and small Tibetan-style villages. The basic guesthouses we will find on the trail of Tsum valley Trek. Tsum valley trek is rich in wildlife, especially the Himalayan Thar and Blue Sheep. Hunting and fishing is not allow in the Tsum Valley.

The Tsum Valley, a sacred Himalayan pilgrimage valley is in the northern Gorkha, Nepal. The serene Tsum valley trek is enrich in ancient art, culture and religion. The inhabitants people are mostly Tibetan and speak unique dialect. Trails are strewn with artistic chortens and lined with mane walls made of thousands of stone slabs carved. Tsum valley is the main centre of learning and meditation.

Detail Itinerary of Tsum Valley Trek -12 days

Day 01: Kathmandu – Arughat (670m) – Soti Khola (710m, 135km, 8-9 hrs

A westward 70km scenic drive along the Prithvi Highway, through the forested Middle Hills, leads to Malekhu. A 30km secondary tarred road heads north, over the Trisuli Nadi, towards Dhading Besi and a rutted 35km dirt road northwest to Arughat on the Budhi Gandaki. The dirt road winds upwards towards the Gola Bhanjyang where panoramic views of the southern slopes of the Ganesh, Baudha and Manaslu Himals should be possible. The road then drops to cross the Ankhu Khola and later, at Arughat, the Budhi Gandaki that drains the Manaslu – Tsum region. A further ~3 hrs drive up the west bank of the river leads to Soti Khola.

Day 02: Soti Khola – Machha Khola (890m, 14km, 6-7 hrs)

After breakfast, today’s trail rises gradually through beautiful Sal forests. It then undulates over forested and terraced ridges passed numerous waterfalls. The trail is generally narrow, at times clinging to the sides of cliffs. It later drops to pass rice paddies before climbing to the attractive Gurung village of Labubesi (885m/2,800ft). After crossing a suspension bridge at the spectacular Nauli Khola falls, the valley opens out and the trail drops onto gravel banks along the river before rising slightly to the village of Machha (Fish) Khola.

Day 03: Machha Khola to Jagat (1410m, 6 hrs)

The trail follows the river, with minor ups and downs, often dropping to the gravel bar before crossing the Thado Khola and on up to Khorlabesi. A trail from Gorkha joins the Manaslu circuit here and the GHT trail turns east from the Manaslu to the Langtang and Everest regions. Our trail then enters a lush narrow gorge. Beyond is a landslide with a dicey path, shortly before the triple hot spring spouts in Tatopani From the Hot spring we climb over another ridge, then cross the Budhi Gandaki on a suspension bridge. Climb on over a ridge to Dobhan. Crossing a suspension bridge over the Dobhan Khola, the trail climbs on a rugged trail to Duman. Crossing a suspension bridge over the Yaru Khola we climb the stone stairs and then drop to the river and again climb more stone stairs to Tharo Bharyang. Trek along the Budhi Gandaki river then climb towards the village of Jagat.

Day 04: Jagat to Philim (1,590m, 3 hours)

Climb over a rocky ridge to Salleri, and then descend to Setibas. The valley widens a bit as the trail continues up to Ghatta Khola. Continue upstream to a long suspension bridge. Climb up to Philim, a large Gurung village.

Day 05: Philim to Chumling (2363m, 6/7 hours)

Walk past Philim to the north across a forest with the views of the narrowing valley. After Ekle Bhatti cross the gorge, and enter the pine tree forests. Descend down to trail going to the Tsum Valley. Climb through pine and rhododendron forests. Enjoy the views of Himalchuli mountains. Pass Lokpa, climbing further north through pines and rhododendrons. Climb down to Ghumlong, and climbing up to Ripchet. Crossing the Shiar Khola, finally arrive at Chumling. Visit the old Chumling gompa, and the stone streets of the village.

Day 06: Chumling to Chokhangparo (3010m, 5/6 hours)

Cross the suspension bridge onto the opposite bank. Enjoy the great views of Ganesh Himal. Walk past Rainjham to Serpu Khola. Now we enter the hidden valley of Tsum. Another steep climb takes us to the village of Chhokangparo. Weather permitting, enjoy the views of Himalchuli at 7893 meters.

Day 07: Chokhangparo to Nile (3361m,6/7 hours) via Milarepa cave

While climbing above Chokhangparo, better to be careful of altitude problems. Walk past Lamagaon to the Rachen Gompa. Climb up to the Milarepa’s Cave. Then we cross the Shiar Khola. Continue walking through the villages of Phurbe and Pangdun. After crossing the village of Chhule, climb upstream and cross the bridge to finally arrive at Nile.

Day 08: Nile – Mu Gompa (3,709m) – Chhekampar (3,010m, 13km, 6-7 hrs) via Rachen Gompa

Make an early start for the 2hr walk up to the 77 year old Mu Gompa with another ¾ hr stiff hike up to the small 856 year old Dephyu Doma Nunnery (place of the birth of light) which is superbly situated at 4,000m/13,100ft on a small promontory; with Ganesh II as its primary view. Views of the western Ganesh Himal are visible to the left of an intervening peak. Mu only has the latter view (including Ganesh I) and a view back down the valley. Mu is the highest permanent settlement in the Tsum Valley. To the north are seasonal kharkas and passes to Tibet. Return to Nile for lunch, then trek back to Chhekampar.

Day 09: Chhekampar to Lokpa(1800m, 6-7 hours)

Breakfast and trek down to Lokpa for 6-7 hours. Stay night at Lokpa.

Day 10: Lokpa to Doban(1070 m, 7-8 hours)

After a short trek from Lokpa we meet the trail of the Manaslu circuit trek trail. Then we continue return trek alog the bank of Budhi Gandaki river to Doban via Philip, Sridibas and Salleri. After lunch at Jagat, we again cross the suspension bridge to reach Yaruphant and further down trek to Doban for night stay.

Day 11: Dovan to Soti Khola(700m, 7-8 hours)

Day 12: Soti Khola to Kathmandu(1300m, 7-8 hours)

Breakfast and get early moring bus drive to Kathmandu via Arughat and Dhading Besi through the Prithvi Highway. The trip ends.

Manaslu Region Trek Accommodation

Manaslu Region Trek accommodation will be basic tea houses for boarding/lodging.This is the most popular style of trekking to Manaslu region trek and simply involves trekking from teahouse to teahouse. Teahouses are essentially small hotels find in local villages that offer both a place to sleep as well as home cooked meals. Rooms are typically shared with 2 trekkers in a room. Bathrooms are shared as well and in the Manaslu region Trek, he lodges usually have running cold water and western style toilets. Also the hot shower is also available but it need to pay extra cost for it.

In some of the villages on the trek, it may be possible to have a private room with an extra cost and we will do our best to arrange that. However, during busy times of the year there is a limited amount of lodging available in some of the villages so it’s generally impossible to arrange private rooms. This is the case even if you’re willing to pay extra since the tea house owners will not give out a private room if it means someone else goes without a room.

Manaslu Region Trek Meals/Food

Trekkers can choose a meal/food from the menus at the tea houses. Typical meals on Manaslu trek includes omelets, toast, boiled eggs, noodle soup, fried rice, macaroni, momo, vegetarian curries, pizza or chow mein. The traditional Nepali Dal Bhat which consists of rice, lentils, and a vegetable is all you can eat and always a good choice. Meat on the mountain is not hygienic and we suggest trekkers stick with vegetarian options.

There is not a problem for vegetarian food and in fact we recommend that everyone stick with a vegetarian diet on the trek as the local meat is not refrigerated properly. If you have special dietary requirements just let us know and we will make sure to assist with the proper menu.

Manaslu Region Trek Weather/Temperature

Weather/Temperature in Summer Manaslu region trek in June, July, and August have the hottest temperature.The temperature in the daytime in Manaslu is between 20 to 25 degree centigrade. The maximum temperature is found in the month of June and July. The nighttime temperatures in Manaslu during the summer is high too. The lowest that the temperature gets in the night time is -3 degree centigrade and a maximum of 5 degrees. The temperature in the months of June and July are pretty similar.

Weather/Temperature in Autumn in Manaslu region Trek lasts from the end of September to the November. This is the part of the year when the cold starts to set in the Manaslu region. The maximum daytime temperature starts to go down from 20 degrees in September and falls to 12 degrees in November. The sun will not be as warm as that in the summers, but that is expected. In September the average nighttime temperature is almost 3 degrees. This starts to fall down and reach in between -7 to – 15 degrees in November

Weather/Temperature in Winter Manaslu region Trek in December, January and February. The coldest of all the months throughout the year, winter at Manaslu as severely cold and poses challenges to the interested people. The average temperature during the daytime in the Manaslu winters is 8 degree centigrade. There is not a lot of difference in the temperature in December, January as well as February. All three months are equally cold. Nighttime is when the temperature falls down drastically. The nighttime temperatures around -7 degrees but it can go as low as -15 degrees.

Weather/Temperature in Spring March/April/ May a perfect time to enjoy Manaslu. The daytime temperature in March is around 12 degrees. This temperature goes up to 15-16 degrees in the month of April and peaks to almost 20 degrees in May. Devoid of biting cold and hot and wet summers, this is a glorious time for all Manaslu lovers.The nighttime temperatures, although sometimes below zero are not alarmingly low. The lowest that nighttime temperatures get is -8 in March. This increases to -5 degrees in April and -3 in May.
